DESCRIPTION
This project protected 130 acres of priority South Fork Nooksack River and Landingstrip Creek habitat in Whatcom County, and improved fish passage by replacing a barrier culvert with a bridge. Additional restoration objectives completed, outside this grant, includes instream habitat restoration through large woody debris placement and riparian plantings. The fish passage barrier was identified on the project site during the SRFB-funded barrier inventory (01-1258N). The barrier was ranked in the top 30 out of 800 for immediate removal. The barrier correction opens up more than a mile of rearing and spawning habitat. The site was planted in hybrid cottonwood that was harvested in 2007. The property contains over 7,500 linear feet of stream channel including Landingstrip Creek and two unnamed tributaries, 50 acres of wetlands, and borders 2,100 linear feet of the SF Nooksack River. Fish presence in the SF Nooksack watershed included ESA-listed spring Chinook and bull trout, coho and chum salmon, steelhead and cutthroate trout. To the east, across the river, the Whatcom Land Trust maintains a 100-acre conservation easement on property owned by Whatcom County Parks and Recreation. To the south, the site adjoins over 200 acres of wetlands, a majority of which lies on land already owned by the Whatcom Land Trust and is currently undergoing restoration. To the west and north, the site adjoins two private properties which have over 4,500 linear feet of stream restoration underway.
