DESCRIPTION
The Lummi Nation purchased 120.8 acres of tidally influenced channel and wetlands in the Smuggler's Slough drainage in the Nooksack River estuary. These are estuarine habitats that, when reconnected, will be significant to the recovery of ESA-listed Chinook salmon and native anadromous char. The project provided a design/feasibility, project alternatives development, detailed budget, final design, a construction plan and permitting for a project that will restore fish passage and tidal hydrology to these critical habitats. The restoration project focused on three areas where flows and passage in Smuggler's Slough are blocked by tidegates, levees, and impassable culverts. The objectives of the restoration project to be designed, budgeted and permitted are: restore juvenile salmon access to 6 miles of rearing and transitional habitat; restore tidal prism to 6 miles of slough habitat; restore saltwater intrusion into 0.5 miles of slough habitat; and restore hydrology to 120.8 acres of wetlands. The properties purchased were prioritized to facilitate the preferred restoration treatment option that will address the above objectives. They will also provide significant opportunities for wetlands and riparian restoration.
