DESCRIPTION
Pend Oreille Conservation District used this funding to remove two side-by-side culverts and a ford that were partial barriers to fish passage on Cedar Creek. The project improved fish passage to approximately 3.75 miles of bull trout and west slope cutthroat trout habitat, including USFWS designated bull trout Critical Habitat located in the immediate vicinity of the project area. Cedar Creek is a tributary to the Pend Oreille River in northeastern Washington State (WRIA 62). Historically, bull trout from the Pend Oreille River and Lake Pend Oreille spawned and reared in WRIA 62 tributaries such as Cedar Creek. Bull trout have been found in Cedar Creek in recent years (1995 and 2003). In 2005, the Cedar Creek Dam, which blocked fish passage to this reach of Cedar Creek, was removed with SRFB funding. With the dam gone, these partial fish passage barriers became priorities for removal to allow unimpeded access to the entire Cedar Creek watershed upstream of the dam. Removal of fish passage barriers (both full and partial) is identified in the Pend Oreille Lead Entity strategy as the #2 priority action for bull trout habitat restoration in the Cedar Creek subbasin, a high priority area in WRIA 62 (ranked #4 of 38).
