DESCRIPTION
Lower Coppei Creek remains a priority restoration reach after the upper stream reach was changed to a protection priority by the Regional Technical Team. Recent work has improved habitat quality in the upper reach, increasing temperature, LWD and complexity. Improvements are attributed to recent CREP riparian restoration and conservation easements. A habitat assessment has been funded for lower Coppei Creek with the intention of producing in-stream project designs. Tours of the reach indicate restoration will be needed however recommendations as to project types will wait for assessment report. In general limiting factors in this reach include poor habitat quality and quantity, low flow, high summer temperature, low LWD recruitment potential, low complexity, and fine sediment. Likely project types that would be supported in this reach by the SRSRB would include riparian restoration and protection, in-stream LWD placement (complexity projects), stream dike setbacks, meander lengthening or conservation easements.
