DESCRIPTION
Spring Rise Restoration provided a peer-reviewed assessment of the Touchet River (RM 42.2-45) in an intensely farmed region of southeast Washington State where the City of Waitsburg is located at the confluence of the Touchet River, Coppei, and Wilson Creeks. The river is disconnected from its floodplain, and in the previous 10 years, 150 feet of bank had eroded along with 60 trees. Spring Rise Restoration developed a final design to stabilize the bank, increase chanel complexity, and revegetae the riparian zone. The site occurs within the geographic range of ESA-listed Mid Columbia River (MCR) steelhead and a major spawning area. Limiting factors in the river are high temperatures, lack of large wood, excessive sediment load, and channel instability. Specific project objectives were to reduce fine sediment input and channel width:depth ratios, add 100 pieces of large wood per river mile, increase pool quantity, and accelerate riparian function in order to achieve less than 10% spawning gravel embeddedness, no more than 4 days of water temperature above 72° F, and 80% bank stability.
The Touchet River Mile 42.5 Assessments Project Report includes: fluvial geomorphic assessment; archaeological investigation; valley geology, soils and well logs; interviews with landowners and residents; information on flooding, levees and bridges; changes to the flow regime, topography and morphology; and a list of known resources. The documents, habitat enhancement design and design risk assessment are available at: https://srp.rco.wa.gov/project/320/8612 . A partnership agreement with Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) enabled us to contract USFS TEAMS to assess/design the RM 42.5 habitat enhancement project.
