Walla Walla County Conservation Districtproposes to implement a restoration project to increase instream habitat complexity, side channel access and floodplain connectivity . This project is located on the Touchet River, rivermile 40.7-41.3 approximately 2 miles below the Coppei Creek confluence, 2.5 miles west of Waitsburg. In the Touchet River MSA, Priority Restoration Reach and a Major Spawning Area for ESA listed Mid-Columbia River Steelhead identified in the Snake River Salmon Recovery Plan. This is also designated a critical habitat for Bull Trout by the USFWS. The overall goals increase roughness elements, promote sediment storage and create a dynamic channel environment with complex side channels and large wood features. This project was originally designed and approved through SRFB. Funding constraints required the project be scaled down. Thisproposal would complete the project and tie together 3 other major restoration projects already completed in this reach. Those projects include; Touchet River Mile 42.5 Habitat Enhancement, (07-1527), and is the last phase of Touchet River McCaw Reach Projects Phases A(11-1580), B Design(14-1895) & B(16-2099)WWCCD will place large wood features in the main and side channels to encourage activation of side channels, increase bar deposition, and develop pools. The existing channel is reduced in complexity and roughness, has degraded riparian vegetation and has incised in some areas.
