DESCRIPTION
This project provided technical assistance, design and cost share assistance to 4 private irrigators through a voluntary compliant screening program. Non-compliant irrigation screens were replaced with NOAA/USFWS and WDFW compliant pump diversion screens to reduce potential salmonid mortality. This project targeted North Fork, Wolf Fork and South Fork Touchet River reaches. These reaches were identified as priority spawning/rearing reaches within the recovery region for salmon, steelhead and bull trout. They are located within the NOAA Fisheries identified Upper Touchet River MSA and are listed as Priority Restoration & Protection Reaches in the Snake River Salmon Recovery Plan. Past cooperative compliant screening efforts have shown that existing diversion screens typically fail to meet the current WDFW screen criteria due to mesh size, sweeping velocity or impingement concerns. Screening projects were prioritized based on their potential impact to the resource and their readiness to proceed.
