DESCRIPTION
Columbia Conservation District used this funding to help decrease stream temperatures in Pataha Creek by planting native riparian vegetation and providing an off-site watering source for approximately 450 head of cattle. Pataha Creek is a major tributary of the Tucannon River, which is a tributary to the Snake River. It is located in Garfield and Columbia counties of southeastern WA. Fish stocks of concern in the creek are bull trout and Snake River steelhead, and sediment from the Pataha to the Tucannon River also affect the Snake River fall Chinook and steelhead that spawn below the confluence. Secondary benefits of the project were increased bank stabilization and bank roughness to reduce water velocity and increase filtering of suspended sediment. The Pataha Creek Model Watershed Plan identified sediment and high water temperatures as limiting factors to fish production. The Pataha Creek plan was locally developed with the assistance of many state and federal agencies and support from the Bonneville Power Administration. Implementation of this project included eliminating two box culvert livestock trails under Highway 12, drilling a well on the south side of the Highway 12, connecting electricity and 6,560 feet of pipeline, and installing three 10,000 gallon storage tanks and three concrete watering troughs. In conjunction with the USDA Conservation Resource Enhancement Program, the project planted 6,400 tree and shrub stems.
