DESCRIPTION
Identified limiting factors for the Walla Walla Basin. Sections of Garrison Creek were found to lack shade and riparian vegetation, & have a shallow, pool-limited channel. Additionally, enhancement will complement ongoing restoration efforts sponsored by the City of College Place. Yellowhawk Creek is fairly well vegetated, however, livestock have access on one side. The channel is also oversteepened in some areas and channelized, requires some maintenance to existing log weirs, has one partial barrier, & lacks pool habitat. Objectives for Garrison Creek include providing shade and in-stream habitat. Thus, we will plant 1000' of streambank, re-establish meanders, & install rootwads & weirs to provide habitat & create pools. Objectives for Yellowhawk Creek involve excluding livestock from riparian areas, creating in-stream habitat, restoring proper channel grade, & removing the fish passage barrier. Here we will install fencing & off-channel watering facilities, perform meander restoration, remove the partial barrier & create a series of rock weirs to provide pools, install log weirs to re-establish grade, & enhance riparian areas where needed. An additional benefit of this project is that these reaches also flow through the grounds of four local schools. Therefore, another major objective is to provide an outdoor science classroom for schoolchildren to learn about salmonids & habitat enhancement. Students will assist in design, planting, & monitoring the projects.
