DESCRIPTION
The Columbia Conservation District used this funding to undertake an instream habitat enhancement and streambank stabilization project on the Touchet River in Columbia County, WA. The reach had limited instream habitat complexity, low amounts of large woody debris (LWD), and an actively eroding right bank. Streambank erosion had reduced the riparian buffer by over 100 feet, resulting in reduced shading benefits and LWD recruitment. Deposited sediment had impacted spawning habitats throughout this and adjoining river reaches. Overall, the project completed 280 feet of LWD placement encompassing 80 pieces of LWD and construction of one rock J-hook structure for flow deflection and pool development. A total of 410 tons of rock was utilized for structure and LWD anchor rock. The site was revegetated with a mixture of 600 willow whips. Fish species that utilize the project area include ESA-listed Mid-Columbia Steelhead (spawning/rearing and migration), Bull Trout (migration and over-wintering), and re-introduced spring Chinook Salmon (migration). The project site is located within the NOAA Fisheries-identified Middle Touchet River Major Spawning Aggregation (MSA). Other planning efforts had also identified regional priority habitat factors and priority actions to enhance salmonid habitats. These included the Northwest Power and Conservation Council's Subbasin Planning and the Snake River Salmon Recovery Planning process, which both utilized ecosystem diagnosis treatment modeling.
