DESCRIPTION
The sedimentation from cropland is adversely affecting the production of steelhead in the middle to upper portions of Deadman Creek in Garfield County. This project is to reduce sedimentation by introducing, developing and maintaining a successful no-till farming program for Gary Bye. This farm is located in the Mayview area of Garfield County in a 20-22 inch rainfall area. The soil type is AoD (Athena silt loam) on a 7 to 25% slope. Deadman Creek drains directly into the Snake River. The current erosion rates on this farm and others has caused large amounts of sediment to reach the Deadman Creek and then be transported to the Snake River. The Deadman Creek has been used as a spawning area and rearing area for the Snake River Steelhead. The sediment from the uplands of the Deadman Watershed has destroyed most of the spawning and rearing habitat in the mid to upper portions of the Deadman Creek Watershed. The project will demonstrate that a long term no-till program is effective, efficient and economically feasible in reducing erosion. The project will consist of the no-till seeding of several fields totalling 200 acres of cropland. This project will cover a period of five years with the same fields being seeded using a no-till farming system. An annual payment of $29 per acre per year will be made to Mr. Bye to help offset the initial costs of implementing the program and reduce part of the financial risk that he will be taking.
