DESCRIPTION
This project purchased a 78 acre permanent conservation easement along both sides of 1.25 miles of the Touchet River, upstream of Bolles Junction near Waitsburg WA. In addition, 3,200 cottonwood whips were planted in the riparian zone. The conservation easement prohibits development, buildings/subdivision, agriculture, grazing, and timber harvest. This reach was identified in the Snake River Salmon Recovery Plan and NWPPC Subbasin Plan as a major spawning aggregation area (MSA) for ESA-threatened Steelhead. The project site was recently restored with riparian buffers through the CREP program. This easement will ensure those buffers stay in place forever and that houses and human encroachment will never restrict the floodplain. The project will make a significant long-term impact to many factors limiting production of ESA-threatened Steelhead in the Touchet River.
