DESCRIPTION
Asotin County Conservation District used this funding to improve an irrigation system on Joseph Creek by replacing an open-water gravity-fed irrigation ditch with a pressurized piped system. The project also dug one well and installed two frost-free hydrants and troughs for livestock. The former intake diversion in Joseph Creek had an instream pushed-up berm to collect water at low flow. This was replaced with a screened pump station (pump fish screening and flow meter not paid with funds from this SRFB Grant). The open irrigation ditch was replaced with 5300 feet of buried PVC pipe to supply 15 acres of irrigated pasture. Hydrants were installed in two pastures to supply water cannons for irrigation. This is now an on-demand system and water is only withdrawn from Joseph Creek when the irrigation system is in use. Prior to this the ditch withdrew water throughout the irrigation season and was inefficient. Calculations done by the NRCS show that the water efficiency gain will be at least 0.155 cfs. A well for livestock water, piping, and two hydrants and troughs were also installed as part of this project. Livestock were watering from the open irrigation ditch and now they have their own source of water. This has resulted in better water quality returned to Joseph Creek. The one acre of continuous stock water right the landowner had is now replaced by the well and the result is more water for Joseph Creek.
