DESCRIPTION
Asotin County Conservation District used this funding to limit access by vehicle and foot traffic to a twelve acre riparian zone along Asotin Creek to reduce the negative effects of recreational vehicle activities in Headgate County Park. This project built 2,225 feet of 5-strand barbed wire fence with cemented in-fence braces and placed 1,200 feet of large boulders.Gate access was built in the fence at several spots for foot access to Asotin Creek. The invasive plant Kochia was removed from 0.6 of an acre in the riparian area and 9.6 acres of the riparian area were planted with over 2,000 native woody plants. One acre was replanted in the late spring of 2010 as a result of herbicide and mowing kill of the initial planting. One project information sign was installed. In the Draft 2005 Snake River Salmon Recovery Plan for SE Washington, Asotin Creek was identified as being in a major spawning aggregation (MSA) on a priority restoration reach. The fish species targeted is the Snake River Steelhead. Headgate Park provides recreational opportunities to hunters, campers and fisherman that take advantage of Headgate pond, which is stocked annually by WDFW.
