DESCRIPTION
The Hansen Project, located on the South Fork of Coppei Creek in Southeastern Walla Walla county, will combine in-stream habitat construction, riparian habitat restoration conservation easement to protect & enhance spawning/rearing habitat for endangered steelhead trout. Livestock will be permanently excluded from more than two miles of stream bank. Riparian areas damaged by decades of grazing will be restored. Spawning & rearing of endangered steelhead will be enhanced through construction of in-stream structures. Mature stands of Douglas Fir & Yellow Pine, located on steep hillsides adjacent to the stream will be permanently protected from commercial logging. Three spring fed tributary creeks to Coppei Cr. will be protected so cold, year round flows can continue to enhance the stream's water quality. Housing development, including construction of seven approved home building sites on the project, will never occur. The WDFW, WWCCD, USFWS, NRCS & TSS have identified the Hansen Project as the top priority for continued riparian buffer restoration on Coppei Creek. To date 1.8 miles of cattle exclusion fencing, 18 in-stream structures and 5.5 miles of riparian buffer have been installed downstream of the Hansen property on Coppei Creek. The Hansen Project will expand this already successful effort to protect & enhance the spawning & rearing of endangered steelhead trout in Coppei Creek. Establishing a conservation easement for the project is vital to this reach of Coppei Creek.
