The Columbia Conservation District (CCD) removed or modified 1,162 feet of existing levees to reconnect approximately 25 acres of floodplain, re-established native plants in more than 5 acres of riparian buffer, constructed 2,571 feet of new offset dike/levee, reconnected 3,300 feet of relic side channel, and installed 33 large wood structures in the floodplain and side channels of the lower Tucannon River. The project occurred along a 3,200 feet long reach of the river downstream of the town of Starbuck, WA. Disturbed construction areas were re-vegetated with a combination of USDA CREP native grass (Conservation Cover), trees and shrub species. CCD planted 2,600 trees and shrubs in the spring of 2015 and an additional 1,235 in the fall of 2015. CCD also completed noxious weed control throughout the project footprint with a focus on False Indigo as a follow up to work previously initiated through the Columbia County Weed Control Board. Project goals were to improve floodplain connectivity, side channel habitat complexity and juvenile high flow refugia to support various life cycle stages of spring & fall Chinook Salmon, steelhead, and Bull Trout. The lower Tucannon River is a minor spawning area for steelhead and Chinook Salmon, and a priority restoration reach in the Salmon Recovery Plan for SE Washington. Anchor QEA developed preliminary designs for this project reach (SRFB #09-1595). Final designs for the project were developed by CCD engineering staff. The project site was rated to have the second-highest reach potential for floodplain rehabilitation basin wide (Anchor, April 2011). This project was prioritized & developed using the restoration framework outlined in Integrated Species Restoration Prioritization, Tucannon River (Anchor 2012).
