DESCRIPTION
Project Area 40 is on the Tucannon Ranch located downstream of the Town of Starbuck in Columbia County. The Columbia Conservation district worked with the private landowner to set back river levees to the outside edge of the existing CREP easement boundary allowing for channel meander and inundation inside the levee set back. Two separate side channels were developed during the project with some excavation and LWD placement in the side channels. The completion of this project will improve winter rearing habitat for spring/summer and fall Snake River Chinook, summer steelhead and bull trout listed as threatened under ESA. This project will also improve spawning and rearing habitat for both fall Chinook and steelhead. Side channel and off channel refuge is limited in the main channel of the Tucannon and may be one of the leading factors limiting over winter survival of salmonids in the Tucannon. The project funding was through a RCO WDOE grant supported through the SRSRB Lead Entity (SRFB) with the objective of improving Fall Chinook spawning and rearing habitat in the lower river. In summary, the project removed 1,251 ft of river levee and opened 22.88 acre of low lying floodplain, and planted 1.69 acres with new riparian trees. Within the floodplain 0.45 miles of high flow side channel were augmented (increased access and wood added) and 0.22 miles of perennial side channel were created and treated with wood.
