DESCRIPTION
5.1 Project Area 37 (River Mile 9.0 to 7.9) Project Area 37 (PA-37) is located in the channel and floodplain between RM 9 (Tucannon River RV Park) to RM 7.9 (inlet to a right bank water diversion canal). Action in this reach include River Levee Setback and LWD placement.
5.1 Project Area 37 (River Mile 9.0 to 7.9)
Project Area 37 (PA-37) is located in the channel and floodplain between RM 9 (Tucannon River RV Park) to RM 7.9 (inlet to a right bank water diversion canal).
5.1.1.1 Channel Characterization
The channel is mostly a single-thread channel (with levees along the right bank) throughout the project area with a bedrock controlled bed and intermittent rock outcrops along the left bank (between RM 8.75 and RM 7.9). The channel is mostly entrenched with little floodplain connectivity and minimal pools and functional large wood. The upstream portion includes the levee along the right bank at the RV Park (at RM 9), isolating the channel from a low floodplain area. One bedrock cascade with a 3-foot drop is located at approximately RM 8.75. The Smith Hallow Road Bridge is located at RM 8.25. The USGS gage is located
along the right bank immediately downstream of the Smith Hallow Road Bridge.
5.1.1.2 Floodplain Characterization
There is limited floodplain throughout most of the project area, with one exception at RM 9 in the vicinity of the Tucannon River RV park levee (right bank). The channel is incised with limited overbank connectivity. Functional riparian vegetation is limited and is in poor to moderate health. The riparian zone is generally narrow throughout the project area, and in some segments lacks any
significant large trees. The riparian zone consists of stands of young to mature alder and locust trees with an understory that consists of an invasive species understory. Channel shading is limited throughout much of the project area due to the lack of a functional riparian zone.
5.1.2 Conceptual Project Actions
Conceptual restoration actions would setback the right bank levee at RM 9 (at the RV park) and add large wood (roughness elements) in the main channel (between RM 9 and 7.9).
