DESCRIPTION
4.2 Project Area 35 (River Mile 11.45 to 10.85) Project Area 35 (PA-35) is located in the channel and floodplain between RM 11.45 and RM 10.85. One bridge crossing (River Ranch Lane) at approximately RM 11.1 provides access for local landowners.
4.2 Project Area 35 (River Mile 11.45 to 10.85)
Project Area 35 (PA-35) is located in the channel and floodplain between RM 11.45 and RM 10.85. One bridge crossing (River Ranch Lane) at approximately RM 11.1 provides access for local landowners.
4.2.1.1 Channel Characterization.
The channel is mostly a single-thread channel (with levees along portions of both banks) and is mostly incised with little floodplain connectivity hroughout most of the project area. Minimal LWD pools and functional large wood are found within the project area. Numerous large rock weirs have been constructed in the channel to help reduce channel incision and provide holding pools for adult fish. Pools have formed on the downstream side of these large rock weirs and along the riprap placed along the channel. Bank treatments consisting of large rock and wood have been constructed along the left bank upstream of the bridge. Tucannon Road is located along the right bank floodplain perimeter throughout the project area.
4.2.1.2 Floodplain Characterization
Floodplain connectivity is limited within the project area. The channel is highly confined and well incised and levees are located along both banks. Tucannon Road and its embankment are located north of the channel. The roadway limits the floodplain extent north of the channel in numerous places. Floodplain channels were documented throughout the project area with limited connectivity to the main channel. The riparian zone is generally poor to moderate in health with mature alder and locust trees and a moderately sparse understory consisting of mostly invasive species. Upstream of the River Ranch Lane bridge (RM 11.15), a stand of alder along both banks provides moderateshade to the channel. Downstream of the bridge, the right bank riparian vegetation thins in places with a generally continuous deciduous riparian stand along the left bank.
4.2.2 Conceptual Project Actions
Conceptual project actions for PA-35 include adding LWD to the mainstem to add complexity and promote activation of low-lying floodplain areas. Large wood pieces would be added to the existing weirs to provide additional hydraulic and habitat complexity.
