DESCRIPTION
Project Area 12 was identified in the Conceptual Restoration Plan for the Tucannon River (Anchor QEA 2011) and is located on Washington Department of Wildlife property within the Wooten Wildlife Area. The project identifies three priority restoration actions for the reach including protection of existing conditions in the main channel, placement of LWD in the long river left side channel and modifying the Deer Lake reservoir to minimize impacts to floodplain connectivity. Natural river process are currently protected on WDFW lands through the Tucannon Floodplain Management Plan 2013 and the side channel was treated with LWD key piece (>6m long and 0.3m dia) in 2015 by WDFW as part of PA-11.
The Tucannon River lacks large wood through much of its length which has led the Snake River Salmon Recovery Plan to call out large wood augmentation as a priority for the Tucannon River. The placement of LWD will benefit all salmonoid species and aid in the creation and maintenance of side channels and other types of off channel habitat. Project Area 12 was identified in the Conceptual Restoration Plan for the Tucannon River (Anchor QEA 2011) with the primary objectives of protecting existing condition in the main channel, increasing channel complexity in the long river left side channel and modifying the Deer Lake reservoir. The main channel is currently protected under the WDFW Floodplain Management Plan 2013. The Deer Lake modifications will also be addressed under the Floodplain Management Plan as WDFW implements that plan. In 2015, WDFW increased side channel complexity by implementing the LWD placement within the side channel. LWD placement took place within the 0.33 mile side channel as part of the active PA-11 project funded through BPA in 2015. The side channel will be surveyed in 2017 using Rapid Habitat Assessment techniques, and habitat conditions and changes in habitat will be reported then..
