DESCRIPTION
This project demonstrates techniques to alleviate accelerated sediment delivery from farm access roads that drain directly into salmonid-bearing streams. This type of project has been identified as a priority in the Snake River Salmon Recovery Plan both in general terms (see items 32-00302 and 32-00236) and in more specific terms (32-00479). Sediment (along with associated nutrients) has been identified in the Walla Walla Watershed PCBs, Chlorinated Pesticides, Fecal Coliform, Temperature, pH & Dissolved Oxygen Total Maximum Daily Load - Water Quality Plan developed by WA-Dept. of Ecology, December 2009. This project demonstrates to private landowners practices that can be used to reduce sediment impacts to streams. It is also hoped this project will demonstrate and provide a template for successful access road construction associated with the development of both rural and recreational home sites.
