DESCRIPTION
Project Area 24 (PA-24) is located within the active channel and floodplain of the Tucannon R. on private property, from the bridge at RM 28.25 to RM 27.5. PA-24 was identified as a tier 1 project in the Tucannon Conceptual Restoration Plan (Anchor 2011), identifying isolated habitats and low channel complexity compared to the goal >2 key LWD pieces (>6m long & 0.3m dia) (Salmon Recovery Plan for SE WA 2011). A preliminary design was prepared under SRFB grant (10-1831) and a final design was developed by the Tucannon Habitat Programmatic for implementation in 2015. A SRFB request for ~30% cost share to complete implementation was granted in 2015. The project was completed in August 2015 with the removal and breaching of 380' of river levee and the placement 498 key pieces LWD (>6m long & 0.3m dia) into 28 structures and 33 single log placement. The project created and enhanced 0.43 miles of side channel habitat and reconnected >5 ac of low floodplain. The project is expected to improve winter /summer rearing habitat for ESA listed Snake River spring Chinook, steelhead and winter rearing for Columbia bull trout.
