DESCRIPTION
Columbia Land Trust acquired for conservation the 579 acre Dillacort Canyon property located on River Mile 5 of the Klickitat River. The property includes approximately 6,000 linear feet of Dillacort Creek and 6,500 feet of Klickitat River. The property extends along the Dillacort Creek drainage and is located on both sides of the Klickitat River. Dillacort provides spawning and rearing habitat for anadromous fish stocks, primarily steelhead and coho. In 1996, a new culvert allowed the first successful passage and spawning in Dillacort since 1974. Wild Klickitat River steelhead are federally "threatened" and have limited tributary spawning and rearing opportunities in this portion of the basin. This project ensures that two miles along the Klickitat River and Dillacort Creek will be permanently conserved for steelhead spawning and rearing habitat. The project site is just 5 miles from the town of Lyle and faced increasing development pressures. It is accessible, with beautiful views and therefore highly threatened by road and house construction. The property surrounds lands owned by the state of Washington: combined with existing Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife land, this project created a conservation area greater than 1,000 acres with connectivity within the watershed to other state and private conservation areas. Columbia Land Trust has worked to enhance and monitor the site since acquisition in 2001.
