DESCRIPTION
Project will begin to reverse a worsening stream degradation problem caused primarily by cattle grazing beginning as early as the 1940s. Currently, the stream wears away at high, confining cutbanks, transports fine sediment out of the meadow and leaves gravel deposits w/in an increasingly broad channel. Pools are infrequent, and the average water depth in less than one foot in summer. We intend to restore fish habitat in the upper Klickitat River, creating pools and providing bank cover in meadow areas mostly by allowing natural aggradation processes to take place. Rehabilitation of the upper Klickitat must entail exclusion of cattle, stabilization of streambanks and making the channel narrower and higher (aggradation) by trapping sediment from upstream. Cattle can be kept from migrating into this isolated area with a half-mile fence across the valley and a cattle guard in the single access road. In-channel and riparian restoration activities will need to occur. Medium-sized and heavily branched fir or lodgepole pine would be fastened along the riverbanks allowing sediments to settle and begin to form new banks. Instream rock structures will be installed in some locations and evaluated as a means of controlling erosion. Rerouting portions of the existing single-track 4x4 road is a fundamental aspect of this proposal. Finally, plantings of appropriate riparian vegetation will be considered to supplement natural propagation.
