DESCRIPTION
Surveyors Creek subbasin is located within the Yakama Indian Reservation draining a 23.8 square mile forested watershed. The riparian corridor provides ample shading and LWD recruitment along the entire stream channel. Wetlands are found within this reach, creating excellent juvenile rearing conditions. Spring chinook and steelhead currently use this portion of the mainstem Klickitat, but cannot negotiate three obstructions on Surveyors Creek. The upper two obstructions are undersized and improperly designed culverts, while the third is a confined cascade, near the Klickitat River confluence. The confined cascade is 4.5 feet in height with large boulders blocking upstream anadromous movement. It is speculated by YIN staff that past logging and road construction activities has increased peak flows, which have in turn increased stream energy resulting in a higher rate of scouring at these falls. The objective of this proposal is to pass anadromous salmon upstream over a semi-natural passage obstruction, and improve passage through two improperly placed and undersized culverts. This project will provide critical tributary spawning and rearing habitat for wild Klickitat River winter and summer Steelhead. Establishing tributary spawning and rearing habitat for coho will help in the BPA's Yakima Klickitat Fisheries Project (YKFP) strategy to develop coho natural production and elevate out-of-basin imports and current Klickitat Hatchery high loading densities.
