DESCRIPTION

The Upper Klickitat River In-Channel and Floodplain Enhancement Project -- Phase 2 enhanced spawning, rearing, and holding habitat for spring Chinook and steelhead along roughly 2.3 miles between river mile 70 and 75 of the Klickitat River. The project is located within the "Upper Klickitat Mainstem: McCreedy Creek (RM 70) to Diamond Fork" reach that is ranked in the top tier of priority geographic areas identified in the Klickitat Lead Entity Region Salmon Recovery Strategy. The project addressed limiting habitat features identified for this reach associated with pool frequency and quality, channel confinement, and floodplain connectivity. The project constructed 35 large woody debris (LWD) jams, reconnected and created 2,000 feet of side channel habitat, and stabilized almost a half mile (cumulative) of bank. Channel complexity was increased via enhancement of existing pools, construction of new pools, and construction of multiple LWD jams. Summer steelhead are listed as ESA-threatened and spring Chinook are listed as WDFW-depressed. Both stocks are identified as a Tier 1 priority species in the Recovery Strategy and will benefit from improved rearing, holding, and spawning conditions.
