DESCRIPTION
Swale Creek, located in central Klickitat County near Goldendale, is a major tributary of the Klickitat River. The Swale Creek sub-basin drains over 70,000 acres of agricultural and range land, pine/white oak transitional forests, and remnant wetlands covering four townships. As part of their effort to restore fish runs in the Klickitat River basin, the Yakama Indian Nation procured BPA funds to begin riparian habitat improvements on Swale Creek and its tributaries. To date, three ponds have been constructed, but tribal funds have been fully allocated, and additional sediment retention ponds are needed to provide year-round flow on Swale Creek.
Approximately 200 acres in the vicinity of Warwick, Washington need ponded areas and native plantings as well as the placement of sills. By placing ponds in strategic locations, we plan to reduce sediment into Swale Creek, while supplementing summer low flows. Heavy equipment will be used to excavate the ponds, flow controls will be installed, then the site will be fenced (hog wired construction) to exclude livestock and native vegetation will be planted. Due to summer "ponding" of Swale Creek, steelhead are only able to utilize the lower portion of the creek. Year-round flows will enable both steelhead and salmon to migrate further up the channel.
