DESCRIPTION
The Upper Klickitat River In-Channel and Floodplain Enhancement Project - Phase 3 reestablished connectivity of a side channel of the upper Klickitat River. The overall goal was to provide enhanced spawning and rearing habitat for spring Chinook salmon and steelhead along roughly 2000 feet (DS of road x-ing) of side-channel in the vicinity of river mile 76 of the Klickitat River. This included replanting the riparian cooridor with native plants to provide shade and cover for spawning and rearing. The project area is located with the "Upper Klickitat Mainstem: McCreedy Creek (RM 70) to Diamond Fork" reach that is ranked in the top tier of priority geographic areas identified in the Klickitat Lead Entity Region Salmon Recovery Strategy. A large component of this project was a new bridge to reconnect the disconnected channels allowing fish passage between the up and downstream sections of the newly created channel. The project addresses limiting habitat features identified for this reach, including channel confinement and floodplain connectivity. The 255 Road, the major arterial road for this portion of the watershed, has a cross-valley alignment. Pre-project there was a single bridge crossing and an undersized culvert. Several side-channels exist upstream of the road embankment. The alignment of the larger of these channels (BFW 20') was deflected where it contacted the road fillslope. The side channel then turned and ran along the toe of the fill for approximately 300'. A historic river alignment existed immediately down-valley of the road fill, by perforating the embankment and installing a 80' bridge this historic channel alignment was reactivated. Additionally, large-woody debris was installed along approx. 750' of the side channel upstream and downstream of the road. Project was also funded with NOAA 2007 Grant.
