DESCRIPTION
This grant funded a project to address active stream channel instability in upper Rattlesnake Creek. The channel instability is a result of vertical incision associated with at least three active knickpoints. The instability was located immediately downstream of an extensive wetlands complex that includes Panakanic Meadows. If left untreated, the channel instability was expected to move upstream, causing channel incision, which could lead to decreased wetland and floodplain function. The Klickitat Salmon Recovery Strategy ranks Rattlesnake Creek as a Tier A basin. Restoration of wetlands and water holding capacity is ranked as an “A” action priority (the highest priority level). The project reduced the stream’s energy at the knickpoints by backwatering these areas. This was accomplished by construction of three large rock riffle structures to control water surface gradient. Woody debris was installed erosive points and throughout the floodplain, especially in places where channel avusion or future instability are more likely. The project area was planted with native vegetation to create riparian and floodplain roughness to prevent future erosion and incision. A livestock exclusion fence was installed around the project area at the request of RCO.
