DESCRIPTION
Prior to the blockage of fish passage at Condit Dam on the White Salmon River, summer and winter steelhead and possibly spring Chinook and Coho salmon accessed Indian Creek for spawning, rearing, and migration. Once Condit Dam was in place in 1913, blocking passaged on the White Salmon River, fish use in Indian Creek was reduced to include a unique population of coastal cutthroat trout as well as resident rainbow trout. Upstream migration of juvenile fish is important in this area due to low flow situations further downstream in Rattlesnake Creek. There are no natural barriers for salmon below the Indian Creek culvert. One man-made partial barrier exists 1.3 miles upstream, and beyond this an additional 4.46 miles of habitat is potentially available. The current Klickitat Lead Entity Salmon Recovery Strategy lists Indian Creek as Tier A, and the replacement of fish passage barrier culverts is listed as an A Action Priority. Indian Creek Road is owned by Klickitat County, and the County Road Dept. worked cooperatively with us on the project, although they did not have substantial resources to lend toward the project. This area was used traditionally by Native Americans for religious purposes, and currently is mostly forested with some residences. Adjacent landowners include a private industrial timber company and a private residence, who both worked cooperatively with us through the design and construction phases. UCD accomplished the bulk of design and permitting with other grant sources. Under SRFB funding, along with two other substantial grant sources, project construction took place during the in-water work window of 2012, with completion and site restoration in Fall 2012.
