DESCRIPTION
Anadromous salmonids began to re-populate the White Salmon River and accessible tributaries after the removal of Condit Dam in 2012. The anadromous stocks expected in the White Salmon include three stocks (L. Col Coho ESU, L. Col. Chinook ESU, and Mid-Col. Steelhead DPS) listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
Funding was requested to develop habitat restoration projects in the lower portions of Rattlesnake Creek, Indian Creek, Spring Creek, and Buck Creek. This request is focused on in-stream and riparian habitat, and may include high priority fish passage and screening. The goal of this project is to develop site-specific projects and landowner support for restoration work in accessible tributaries.
The scope of work included:
- review existing habitat assessments for the lower portions of each tributary. Identify any major data gaps and collect data on aquatic and riparian habitat where needed (Buck Creek)
- based on limiting habitat factors (such as lack of pools, lack of large woody debris, flow limitations), create ideas for habitat improvement projects
- work with landowners to garner support
- prioritize potential projects based on landowner interest, feasibility, habitat value, and cost.
The target restoration actions include large woody debris placement projects and riparian improvement projects. This grant resulted in the development of site-specific restoration projects that address limiting habitat factors.
