DESCRIPTION
Gold Creek contains one of the few remaining populations of the ESA threatened Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) in the upper Yakima Basin. The current seasonal dewatering conditions and lack of habitat complexity in the creek are so dire that if change does not occur immediately, this population will be extirpated. The dewatering creates a passage barrier that blocks mature Bull trout migrating to their natal spawning habitat and strands juvenile fish in disconnected pools, exposing them to predation.
Historically, natural dewatering may have occurred, but nearly a century of anthropogenic impacts has drastically increased the frequency, extent, and duration of dewatering. Interstate 90 gravel borrow pits - Gold Creek Pond and Heli's Pond - act as siphons that exacerbate the dewatering of Gold Creek. Decade
Kittitas Conservation Trust (KCT) will work with partners to restore Gold Creek, east of Snoqualmie Pass, where the Yakima River headwaters provide critical habitat to ESA listed Bull Trout. Gold Creek Valley is also a prominent place for Yakama Nation first foods. KCT proposes to use funds to construct 28 instream logjams along RM 2-3 employing low impact helicopter and ground-based methods. The larger Gold Creek restoration project is designed to:-Restore 2.5+ miles of historic surface and ground water interactions;-Expand existing wildlife migration corridors;-Develop interpretive recreational opportunities;-Improve the systems resilience in the face of climate change;-Install 100+ engineered log structures to replicate habitat and channel complexity found in the historic old-growth riparian forest of the Gold Creek Valley;-Restore 27+ acres of high-quality wetlands in Gold Creek Pond to provide historic instream and ground water flow paths, improve water quality and serve to sequester carbon; and-Reintroduce the creek's connection to over 245 acres of floodplain. Overall, the goal is to improve Gold Creek flows to reduce the duration and extents of seasonal dewatering and improve adult Bull Trout and future salmon migration access to spawning and rearing habitats upstream. This proposal seeks funding to match federal dollars ($2,475,000) sought to work in the specific reach of river mile 2-3. KCT is pursuing funds for RM 1-2 & Gold Creek Pond actions from other funders.
