DESCRIPTION
The Yakima Nation will reconnect the Tieton River to its floodplain and side-channel habitat between RM ~4.2 to ~4.8 in Yakima County, Washington. The key restoration actions include:-excavating an 880-foot side-channel inlet to reconnect 2280 feet of abandoned side-channel for adult spawning and juvenile rearing habitat;-placing excavated material in a 14,000 sq ft lateral sediment nourishment bar to provide an added source of spawning materials to the mainstem;-constructing an engineered boulder riffle in the Tieton River to form a pool, locally raise the water surface elevation to deflect flow into the side channel, and retain gravels upstream;-constructing an engineered logjam to form a pool and split mainstem flow into the side channel inlet;-relocating the Tieton River nature trail to enable a 4.9 acre increase in floodplain inundation; -planting 2.9 acres of riparian habitat to increase cover over the new side channel inlet and throughout the floodplain. The Tieton river restoration project will substantially benefit habitat, increasing the channel length, number of pools, weighted usable area for fish, and floodplain inundation. Sediment retention in the mainstem channel will be increased due to the lowered velocities and reduced sediment transport capacity. The goal of the project is to improve habitat in this section of the Tieton River for ESA listed Steelhead spawning and rearing.
