DESCRIPTION
The North Yakima Conservation District propose to develop a
preliminary design to improve fish screening and passage at three irrigation
diversions, as well as to improve passage, flow management, and provide water
measuring at the existing diversion dams that divide north and south fork
flows. The project is located on Wenas Creek from approximately 200 feet and 0.75
miles upstream of Sisk Road. The three diversions consist of a right bank
gravity diversion that is unscreened and creates a 3-foot drop in water surface
elevation when check boards are added. The second diversion consists of a
pumping station located on left bank that is not equipped with a compliant fish
screen and is regularly inundated with alluvial deposition which requires
instream manipulation with equipment. The third diversion dam consists of an unscreened
gravity diversion that creates a 1.5-foot drop in surface water elevation. The diversion
dams that splits flow between the forks consists of two check dams that divert
flows and create a 1.5-foot drop in water surface elevation. The project will use
desk top and field investigations to produce conceptual design alternatives
aimed at potential consolidation of the
three most upstream features and infrastructure to provide fish passage and
screening for all life stages of salmonids at all periods of the hydrograph for
all structures. A preferred alternative will be chosen and developed into a
more detailed preliminary design.
The North Yakima Conservation District (NYCD) proposes to develop preliminary designs to improve fish passage and provide protection from entrainment for Mid Columbia steelhead at three diversions on Wenas Creek, approximately 0.75 miles upstream of Sisk Road in Yakima County . The three diversions consist of 1) A pumping station located on left bank, equipped with a non-compliant fish screen, and regularly inundated with alluvial deposition which requires instream work to keep clear;2) A right bank gravity check dam diversion that is unscreened and creates a fish passage barrier;3) The Wenas Irrigation District (WID) diversion dam that diverts flow between the North and South Fork Wenas Creek for irrigation, and creates a fish passage barrier. The project will use desktop and field investigations to produce conceptual design alternatives aimed at potential consolidation of the three diversions, provide fish passage and screening for all life stages of steelhead and native fish at all periods of the hydrograph, and improve flow monitoring capabilities at the WID diversion. A preferred alternative will be chosen and developed into a more detailed preliminary design (per Manual 18 Appendix D-2).
