North Yakima Conservation District propose a stream and floodplain restoration and screening project on 0.3 miles of Ahtanum Creek, southwest of Yakima, WA to increase fish habitat complexity, improve floodplain function, and provide protection from entrainment for coho salmon, bull trout, and ESA listed steelhead. These elements will be accomplished through the installation of several engineered large wood and rock habitat and floodplain roughness features that will provide instream cover, as well as initiate pool formation, side channel development, groundwater recharge, and wood recruitment. The project will also remove a small section of remnant dike. And it will eliminate fish entrainment into an existing unscreened gravity diversion through the installation of a fish screen compliant with WA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife and National Marine Fisheries Service criteria along with a fish bypass and headgate. Stream regrading and grade controls will maintain flow into the diversion, eliminating the need for the irrigator to access the creek to build push-up diversion structures in the stream every year.
