DESCRIPTION
Swauk Creek, a tributary to the Upper Yakima River in Kittitas County, WA, offers spawning and rearing habitat for steelhead, Chinook Salmon, and resident Rainbow and Cutthroat trout. Swauk Creek suffers impaired floodplain function and habitat degradation due to historical land use and the proximity of Highway 97. This project proposes to improve floodplain connection and in-stream habitat in a ½ mile reach, in conjunction with the replacement of two barrier culverts (culvert replacement is occurring outside of this grant proposal). Mid-Columbia Fisheries and contracted engineers would work collaboratively with the WA State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the USDA Forest Service (USFS) to: 1.Install large wood structures to encourage streambed aggradation to elevations that allow frequent connection with the historic floodplain and flow paths; 2.Increase channel complexity and floodplain roughness through placement of individual large wood pieces in Swauk Creek and on the floodplain; 3.Remove or lower the railroad and road berms that constrain the stream in selected places; 4.Stabilize disturbed soils by planting native herbaceous plants; 5.Plant hardwoods in a narrow riparian corridor along the stream; and 6.Change the inlet elevation of culverts in a meadow west of the project reach to trap water on the old floodplain. The project is expected to result in improved spawning and rearing habitat for steelhead, resident Rainbow, and Cutthroat trout.
