DESCRIPTION
Because of the ongoing flooding problems on Cowiche Creek, Yakima County would like to move forward on the relocation of Lower Cowiche Creek through restoration SRFB funding. Cowiche Creek is a tributary of the Naches River, entering on the right bank near RM 2.7 in Yakima County, WA. Project is located on an operating orchard owned by Squire/Ingham Co. Yakima County Flood Control Zone District acquired a 35.22 acre conservation easement on the property through SRFB funding project #10-1909. Current request is for funding to realign Cowiche Creek to a more natural channel which will result in synergistic habitat benefitting fish and wildlife. The current channel has been straightened and leveed for irrigation purposes. The Lower Cowiche Creek reach has been extensively modified to its current configuration to accommodate agricultural (orchard) land use. The creek has been channelized and confined using small levees. There are two undersized bridges on Cowiche Creek. One is an abandoned railroad grade with an undersized bridge which created a channel constriction at the upstream end of the project site. Yakima County designed and constructed a new foot bridge in early 2017. The other bridge, which is often referred to Clover Lane Bridge is located on the existing Cowiche Creek within the orchard and will need to be replaced with another similar farm bridge over the new channel in order for Squire/Ingham to operate efficiently.
