DESCRIPTION
The Kittitas County Conservation District working together with Washington State Parks will remove a fish passage barrier and an unscreened irrigation withdrawal on Coleman Creek east of Ellensburg. The barrier is a channel spanning concrete structure where flash boards are installed to dam the creek water and allow it to flow out a headgate into an earthen irrigation ditch. The diverted water is surface applied to the adjacent 90 acre hay field. This project will replace the surface irrigation with a center pivot sprinkler system, install a pump station and install a fish screen to prevent fish from entering the irrigation system. Then the channel spanning diversion structure will be modified to provide passage for the juvenile and adult fish in Coleman Creek. Coleman Creek is a tributary in the Wilson-Naneum subbasin in the Kittitas Valley. The project site is six stream miles from the Yakima River at RM 147 (Wilson Creek confluence).
