DESCRIPTION
Trout Unlimited proposes a salmon and steelhead habitat restoration project that increases juvenile rearing and feeding habitat, increases floodplain connectivity, coordinates with landowner agricultural operations, and increases community relations. The project will breach a levee to allow formation of a 2000’ long side-channel through disconnected floodplain on the west/south bank of the Yakima River outside Ellensburg, WA (a short distance downstream from the Irene Rinehart Park). Additionally, this project will reduce the volume of a floodplain pond (suspected abandoned gravel pit) in order to reduce the threat of stranding and predation to juvenile salmonids after annual high flows. Partially filling the pond will maintain its wetland nature while also improving fish habitat. The requested funds will go toward the construction of a side-channel inlet, side-channel earthwork, flood-fence, and pond-filling. The goal is to increase juvenile rearing habitat while working with a local landowner to implement a project that helps salmon while not injuring agriculture. All species of salmonids are expected to benefit, especially ESA-threatened Mid-Columbia steelhead and Bull trout.
