DESCRIPTION
WDFW will use this grant to acquire approximately 1,602 acres of forest and aquatic habitat on the east slope of the central Cascade Mountains in Kittitas County. The site is located approximately 12 miles southwest of Ellensburg, between the LT Murray Wildlife Area to the east and the National Forest to the west. The objective of this project is to conserve critical habitat in a biologically rich and high priority location, while facilitating coordinated land management and protecting public access. The species diversity in this proposal is a powerful indicator of the habitat quality. This proposal provides breeding and foraging habitat for northern spotted owls, supports large ungulate herds, and contains headwater streams that support steelhead and salmon recovery efforts. Conservation here will implement key elements identified in state and federal management and recovery plans. Recreational use of these lands is an important community and regional value. Longstanding and popular access through these lands to public ownership is under threat, so public support for this project is strong. The previous Heart of the Cascades acquisitions, totaling ~28 square miles, have been completed using grants from WWRP and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Section 6 program. This acquisition will secure a critical remaining gap in the checkerboard landscape, thereby increasing habitat connectivity and buffering existing conservation lands.
