The Kittitas County Conservation District (KCCD) completed the Parke Creek - Caribou Creek Fish Screening Project to eliminate juvenile fish mortality at three irrigation diversions, one on Parke Creek (Worksite #1) and two on Caribou Creek (Worksite #2) southeast of Ellensburg. Worksite #1: The Parke Creek diversion had three water right holders. Two had already been moved to pump diversions. As part of this project, KCCD relocated the remaining water right holder 0.98 miles downstream to an existing screened diversion that served their property on Cherry Creek. Specific project elements included a new headgate and pump at the downstream location, a new mainline to deliver water from the new point of diversion to the field, and a new sprinkler system that utilizes less water than the previous rill irrigation system. Worksite #2: Upstream of the Parke Creek site ((Worksite #1) were two more unscreened gravity irrigation diversions on Caribou Creek (Worksite #2). As part of this project, those two diversions were consolidated and converted to a pump station with a single intake outfitted with a compliant fish screen 0.8 miles downstream. Specific project elements included installing a pump and fish screen at the downstream location, a new mainline to deliver water from the new point of diversion to the field, and a new sprinkler system that utilizes less water than the previous rill irrigation system. This project improved potential juvenile rearing habitat for mid-Columbia summer steelhead, spring Chinook and Coho, as well as resident fish, by protecting juveniles and fry from entrainment in irrigation systems, by leaving water in each creek for a longer distance before being diverted, and by improving water quality through reduced agricultural runoff. In addition, this project allowed for the removal of the two Caribou Creek diversion structures with a separate funding source (not part of this project) in February 2017. And it allowed 0.185 cfs (73 ac-ft) of water in Caribou Creek to be placed in the WA State Trust Water Rights Program (not part of this project). The remaining Parke Creek diversion structure remains a partial fish passage barrier; funding for correction of that structure is actively being pursued. The total project cost was $200,722, higher than the $126,733 that was originally proposed. The reason for this difference is that proposed amount only included the minimum required 15% match. The final amount includes all project costs.
