The Cherry Creek Barrier Removal and Screening Project provided compliant fish screens for 4 surface water diversions; and removed 2 fish passage barriers to allow access to 1.98 miles of rearing habitat. The first barrier is 2.2 miles from the Yakima River, with no barriers between the river and the project. Juvenile spring Chinook and steelhead trout are known to utilize the reach directly below the barriers addressed by this project. A significant resident population of rainbow trout exists throughout the entire Cherry Creek system. Upstream are 50 stream miles in 3 tributaries. These creeks, like all the tributaries in the Kittitas Valley are extensively modified and contain passage barriers and unscreened diversions. This project was the critical first step toward the larger goal of restoring access, protecting fish from entrainment and improving habitat conditions in the sub-basin. This project was proposed as part of the Yakima Tributary Access & Habitat Program (YTAHP) and fell within YTAHP's preliminary prioritization of actions and geographic areas. It was also consistent with the prioritization discussed by the Cherry Tributary Team.
