DESCRIPTION
The Kittitas County Conservation District used this funding for the Currier Creek-Ellensburg Water Company (EWC) Siphon and Screen Project, which separated the EWC main canal from Currier Creek and added a fish screen and diversion facility to allow EWC to safely divert from Currier Creek. The project 1) removed a 120-year-old fish passage barrier created by the canal-creek intersection, 2) prevents fish entrainment in the canal, 3) restored the creek channel, 4) added a compliant fish screen to the diversion with a water meter and automated screen cleaner, and 5) planted riparian vegetation. This project addressed water quality and fish passage issues for resident rainbow, anadromous coho and chinook and ESA-listed steelhead, as well as improving canal operation. The fish screen meets WDFW/NOAA Fisheries criteria. This project was part of a coordinated effort between the Kittitas County Conservation District, Yakama Nation, and Kittitas Conservation Trust to open fish passage from the Yakima River through Reecer and Currier Creeks to provide more than 2 miles of fish habitat in this critical reach of the Upper Yakima River.
