The Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group (MCFEG) decommissioned approximately 5.25 miles of Forest Service Road (FSR) 1501 from its beginning at FSR 1500 to its junction with FSR 1503 near the National Forest boundary. In addition, MCFEG installed 500 pieces of wood by helicopter in key locations in the five miles of stream adjacent to the decommissioned road. Little Rattlesnake Creek is a tributary to Rattlesnake Creek in the Naches River drainage in Yakima County, WA. It hosts steelhead, spring Chinook, and bull trout, as well as resident rainbow and cutthroat trout. The presence of FSR 1501 immediately adjacent to Little Rattlesnake Creek had reduced overhead canopy (and stream shading), degraded floodplain function, interrupted hydrologic processes, and is likely to have affected water temperature over time. Obliteration of the first 5.25 miles of FSR1501 will increase woody debris recruitment, allow for the development of complex habitat, reduce sediment input to the stream, and may allow for the reduction of peak water temperatures. Instream wood placement was intended to reduce channel incision and encourage floodplain reconnection. This project was funded by $400,000 of WA Dept of Ecology's Kennewick General Hospital Mitigation funds, $260,000 of state Salmon Recovery Funding Board funds, and $37,500 match.
