DESCRIPTION
This project proposes to improve fish habitat and reconnect floodplains by installing structures to snag and retain large wood in the West and North Fork Teanaway Rivers. These structures will increase pool frequency, capture gravels to cover exposed bedrock, and provide cover for fish. The Teanaway River Forks have legacies of splash damming, timber harvest, beaver and large wood removal. Each fork displays exposed bedrock, low pool frequency, high stream temperatures, and each fork lacks the key large wood pieces that would otherwise act to trap smaller pieces. This project will design and install structures, coordinate with stakeholders and concerned land owners, and fence and revegetate over 2000 linear feet of adjacent stream bank.
The Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group proposes to improve fish habitat and reconnect floodplains by completing final design for structures to snag and retain large wood in the West and North Fork Teanaway Rivers, north of Cle Elum. These structures will be designed to increase pool frequency, capture gravels to cover exposed bedrock, and provide cover for fish. The Teanaway River Forks have legacies of splash damming, timber harvest, beaver and large wood removal. Each fork displays exposed bedrock, low pool frequency, and high stream temperatures, and each fork lacks the key large wood pieces that would otherwise act to trap smaller pieces. This project will coordinate with the new landowners and managers of the property, design structures, coordinate with stakeholders and downstream land owners, and plan for fencing and revegetation. This project is intended to benefit Mid-Columbia steelhead and spring-run Chinook.
