Ramblers Property Acquisition and Restoration Project purchased two parcels for a total of 17.75 acres on an island on the Naches River above Nelson Dam in Yakima, WA. This property is located within the floodplain and has been completely inundated during the 50 year events. The last event occurred in 1996 and completely destroyed the home, shop, sheds and bridge which were present at that time. Purpose of the project is to remove the debris left from the previous floods, including building materials left over from structures, appliances, metal fence posts and miscellaneous refuse. The project will also accelerate the return of natural sediment transport at this location and downstream. Currently the river is hugging the north bank and is down cutting and narrowing. Two channels will be constructed through Ramblers Island to convey flow from the northwest side of the island to the southeast corner of the island. The channels will be approximately 3 feet deep with 1:1 side slopes. The upper (main) channel is approximately 800 ft in length, and conveys water across the island, while the lower channel is approximately 400 feet in length and ties into the upper channel at about the mid-way point. This project will allow the high water to move the course sediment downstream on more of a natural basis and move the river off of the north bank. Creation of off channel habitat will benefit ESA listed steelhead and bull trout as well as spring and fall chinook.
