DESCRIPTION
This project is a floodplain and off-channel habitat restoration project along river mile 109 of the Yakima River. The reach once hosted thousands of acres of naturally functioning floodplain that provided diverse habitat for resident and anadromous fish, and a high level of ecological resiliency that benefited multiple species. The project site is owned by the City of Yakima and, once completed, will benefit steelhead, Coho and chinook salmon, lamprey, and resident fish. The project will reshape a shallow gravel-pit pond in the floodplain, restore the pond's outlet to the Yakima River and enhance the value of intergravel flow on the site and downstream. This will involve re-shaping the landscape to reflect floodplain shapes (horizontal and vertical), re-establishing native floodplain and riparian vegetation, and replacing a 40 ft culvert with a structure that will allow for unrestricted movement of fish, water and substrate. This project is the first third of the first phase of a two phase city project that will establish the highest ecological value at the site and allow significant levy setback to occur throughout the project reach. This will lead to an additional 200-300 acres of restored habitat in the Gap to Gap reach on property owned by the City, the Greenway, Yakama Nation and Washington Department of Transportation. Primarily, this will contribute to restoration of wild salmon and steelhead recovery and will also have outdoor recreation benefits for birding, walking
