The City of Yakima restored floodplain and off-channel habitat at mile 109 of the Yakima River. The reach once hosted thousands of acres of naturally functioning floodplain that provided diverse habitat for resident and anadromous fish, and a high level of ecological resiliency that benefited multiple species. The project site is owned by the City of Yakima. The City reshaped a shallow gravel-pit pond in the floodplain and excavated three inlet channels to the pond to increase the quality and quantity of edge habitat and increase groundwater influx to the pond. The City restored fish passage between the pond and the Yakima River, added wood and rock structures in the inlet and outlet channels and pond to provide cover and improve fish habitat, reshaped floodplain topography, and re-established native floodplain and riparian vegetation along the margins of the pond and pond outlet channel. The project is intended to benefit steelhead, Coho and Chinook salmon, Lamprey, and resident fish. Note that less acreage was planted than proposed as additional work is planned to restore the floodplain prior to planting. This project will establish the highest ecological value at the site and aligns with the larger Gap to Gap project that will lead to an additional 200-300 acres of restored habitat in the Gap to Gap reach of the Yakima River on property owned by the City, the Greenway, Yakama Nation and Washington Department of Transportation. These projects will collectively contribute to wild salmon and steelhead recovery and will also have outdoor recreation benefits for birding, walking, jogging, and other trail use along the greenway path.
