DESCRIPTION
Currier Creek is tributary to Reecer Creek and then the Yakima River near Ellensburg. Mainstem upper Yakima flows are controlled by releases from storage impoundments producing water velocities and timing contrary to biological needs of rearing salmonids. Tributaries are the best locations for rearing and recovering wild salmon populations in normative flow and temperature conditions. Among the Ellensburg tributary streams, Currier Creek is uniquely barrier free and accessible to salmonids. Removing nine relic diversion structures created unimpeded fish passage into 3.9 stream miles. Currier is a priority stream for restoration and protection of Steelhead, Coho and Chinook salmon. Currier was modified and adapted to convey water for irrigated agriculture. Sections were artificially straightened and confined resulting in channel incision and floodplain disconnection. Proposed habitat restorations are designed to re-activate natural channel forming processes that contribute to ecosystem health and durability. Stream realignment in the upper reach of the 0.95 mile project will add sinuosity and hydrologic complexity. New meanders add pool habitat, increase the reach from 620 to 850 feet and restore complex geometry. Instream grade controls using engineered logjams restore natural pool-riffle relationships. Revegetation includes removing invasive species, planting native trees and shrubs on 17 acres and periodic monitoring and stewardship of the project area.
