DESCRIPTION
Kittitas County Conservation District corrected a fish passage barrier on the mainstem Teanaway River that was impeding fish passage into the majority of the Teanaway watershed during low flows. The project site is located just downstream of Red Bridge Road in Kittitas County. The barrier was created as a result of damage during a January 2009 flood event. During that event, a debris jam on the bridge forced flows to the right side of the bridge and subsequently an existing downstream headcut moved up to and under the bridge. The head cut dropped the elevation of the Teanaway River to a point that forced water right holders to create rock and gravel dams to direct water into their pump station. Those dams impacted upstream fish passage in low flows and would have become more substantial with each passing season as the head cut continued upstream. This project constructed six channel spanning rock structures to stabilize the streambed and return the river to an elevation that allows water to flow to the pump station while ensuring year round fish passage. The project benefits summer steelhead, spring Chinook and bull trout who all utilize the Teanaway River to spawn and rear.
