DESCRIPTION
Taylor Ditch watershed is a natural channel that flows parallel to the west bank of the Yakima River mainstem immediately above Selah Gap. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation through their Yakima River Basin Water Enhancement Program has identified this reach of the Yakima Basin as a priority area for habitat restoration. Fish managers and limnologists believe an interaction between surface and shallow groundwater (hyporheic zones) occurs in the project area. Historically, hyporheic inflow moderated summer maximum and winter minimum temperatures in Taylor Ditch and the Yakima mainstem, providing more optimal rearing habitats for anadromous fish. The benefit of this function to salmonids has been reduced because of the following human induced alterations: artificial migration barriers have been constructed that prevent salmonids from reaching much of Taylor Ditch; much of the riparian habitat has been cleared; small ponds have been constructed that intercept and exacerbate temperature extremes in Taylor Ditch; and human activities have impaired water quality. The project will involve water quality monitoring, establishing contact and discussing habitat issues with landowners, identification of habitat impairments and opportunities for restoration. Restoration activities that can be accomplished within the funding limitations of this grant will be implemented. Other activities will be prioritized for implementation with funding from other sources.
