DESCRIPTION
Northwest Service Academy used this funding to help restore lower Lmmuma Creek by: 1. Building a cattle exclusion fence along two miles of Lmmuma Creek. 2. Building a temporary electric fence along one mile of the Yakima River. 3. Removing noxious, exotic weeds. 4. Planting extensive native vegetation 5. Placing rootwads in strategic locations. Off-channel rearing is a limiting habitat factor for the Yakima Canyon reach of the Yakima River. Located between Yakima and Ellensburg, Lmmuma Creek provides the best oppurtunity for off-channel rearing in the Yakima Canyon. Lmmuma Creek flows year-round and is barrier-free. Fish do not utilize the upper Lmmuma Creek, but have access to the project site. Lmmuma Creek is considered a Class A (excellent) stream in terms of Department of Ecology water quality criteria. Most of the upper Lmmuma Creek watershed is in federal ownership (Yakima Military Training Center). Cattle were barred from the training center property in 1996. The Army has conducted a few small restoration projects on their ownership. The lower end of Lmmuma Creek is in private ownership and prior to this project cattle were free ranging, resulting in a riparian zone that had practically no native vegetation cover.
